The Everest Base Camp has become one of the most popular treks in Nepal and adventure freaks from across the globe attempt it every year. We recently wrote about how to get there and we also covered Jayesh Morvankar in our “Featured Traveller” section for his EBC climb. Here, we bring to you some amazing facts about the trek and Nepal:
1) The area at 18,000 ft i.e the Everest Summit is known as the Zone of Deterioration because the rate at which cells deteriorate there is higher than the rate at which new cells develop.
2) Climbing the peak is not a linear progression. Each time you go up eg: Camp 1, you trek back down to Base Camp for recovery. So you ascent, descend till your body gets acclimatized to the altitude and lack of oxygen. The final summit push is 4 days. Sometimes trekkers go even below base camp to recover more.
3) Originally Base camp height was 18,300 ft, now it is brought down to 17,700 ft.
4) There is a cafe in Kathmandu called Rum Doodle. All those who have done the Everest Base Camp, they are given a Yeti's Footprint on which they can inscribe what they like and it is put up in the cafe.
5) There is a record book in Gokyo Ri to climb the mountain in 60mins. (Jayesh happens to be the 2nd Indian to have completed the record and there are only 16 other people in the world to have done this.)
6) Completing the EBC is a matter of great pride, people call themselves 5000ers if they have done Base Camp while those who have completed the trek called themselves 8000ers.
7) On a lighter note, water at Base Camp is prohibitively expensive at INR 450/- per bottle. But very good quality food right from chocolate cakes to carrot cakes, everything is served! INR 100/- notes accepted everywhere. Denomination of INR 500 or INR 1000 is not accepted.
