From late September through early April, when Ilulissat's skies are dark enough, the Aurora Borealis is visible on clear nights with remarkable frequency. Clothing: winter

A Merino wool base layer top and warm leggings worn against the skin manage moisture and fleece mid-layers ensure warmth during active winter activities such as dog sledding and snowshoeing, keeping the skin dry even as exertion raises body temperature in -15°C air.

An insulated parka for women or men, waterproof and windproof, is the correct outer layer for Greenlandic winter.  Ilulissat at -19°C with katabatic wind off the ice sheet is one of the most demanding cold environments a civilian traveler will encounter.

Wool socks for men and women, knee-length, inside insulated waterproof winter boots rated to at least -30°C, are non-negotiable in January and February. A balaclava covering the nose, mouth, and ears, worn under the jacket hood, is essential for any extended outdoor exposure. Waterproof insulated mittens over thin glove liners for any task requiring dexterity complete the extremity protection.

Clothing: summer

Summer in Greenland is genuinely mild in the south and warm in Kangerlussuaq. The same Merino wool base layer works as a standalone top for hiking. A lightweight waterproof jacket covers the frequent rain showers and the cold wind off the ice sheet.
