Kosha's Glossary of Terms- Know Your Garments
Here is a list of common terms we use to highlight the special technical features of our designs. Our garments are real life tested, researched and developed with care, not just for leisure and lifestyle travel, but for extreme adventures and winter sports too!
A winter layering system consists of a base layer, a mid layer, a shell layer and accessories. It is the way a person layers up or dresses up during winter to stay warm. It is important to evenly cover oneself instead of bulking one portion to prevent hypothermia.
A base layer is the first layer of your outfit or the layer closest to your body. Usually it is a thermal which consists of a thermal top and thermal pants/leggings that can be worn for leisure and adventure. The base layer should be skin friendly, durable, lightweight and have special qualities to double up as a t-shirt and keep you warm without overheating.
A mid layer is usually a sweater or pullover that is usually worn over the thermal. Oftentimes a hooded sweatshirt or track pants or joggers are used as mid-layers as well. This layer can be for everyday use, workouts or travel as well.
A shell layer is the topmost or final layer of clothes and it is usually a winter jacket or coat. This shell layer is supposed to protect you from external elements such as rain, snow or wind. The shell layers can be hard shells or soft shells, depending on what they are being used for.
A hard shell is usually jackets and pants that are waterproof or snow-proof, such as rain jackets, windcheaters, ski pants etc.
A soft shell is usually a more lifestyle garment such as a smart parka or trendy overcoat.
Accessories are one of the most versatile parts of the winter layering system and consist of beanies, gloves, mittens, mufflers, socks, monkey caps and scarves. Accessories are not only fun to style an outfit with, but extremely important to protect sensitive parts of the head, the nose, the ears, the hands and the feet.
Additionally, there are also accessories for calves such as leg warmers and stockings, or for the neck such as infinity scarves and turtle neck inserts. The 2020 addition to accessories world are masks!
Our collections being technical in nature are designed without compromise on quality with features that enhance comfort and performance during travel. Our garments have an optimum weight to warmth ratio.
One of our hero products is the Kosha Base Layer, which is our thermals. These are made of Merino Wool and Bamboo Fiber and are 100% eco-friendly - made from a soft and new age nano tech fiber, unlike old school itchy wool.

To better understand their specialty, here is a glossary of terms we label them with:
All weather: Product can be worn or used in any type of weather and any season. Sunny, rainy, snowy, etc. Usually catering to a temperature range of 9°C to 30°C.
Anti-bacterial: fabric is treated with a variety of substances to keep away bacteria, fungi, and viruses from flourishing within its fibers.
Anti-odour: Fabric is breathable, meaning it will prevent odor-causing bacteria to grow that usually come from the human body.
Arch-support: There is a support placed inside a shoe/the socks so that its molded form fits the arch of the foot and relieves strain on the muscles of the foot while walking, standing, etc.
Bamboo: A fast growing plant that is used in the production of fabric because it is strong, soft, durable, anti-bacterial and moisture wicking.
Breathable: A breathable fabric allows moisture vapour to be transmitted through the material.
Coconut button: A vegan, sustainable option to plastic / shell / animal sourced buttons. It is made from the hard shell of the coconut fruit.
Color brilliance: The fabric retains colour better than regular cottons because of deeper dye absorption. The colour of the garment stays and is much slower to fade, even after many years of use.
Light weight: The fabric is light and not heavy. It can be worn without feeling any burden. Merino Wool: A type of wool coat sourced from excess wool on Merino Sheep. It has special temperature regulating properties and is fire-resistant. It is also super soft and a moisture wicking wool.
Minimal pilling: Pilling is a surface defect that develops in textiles caused by wear and tear, and is generally considered an undesirable trait. It is the small clump of wool or fleece that look like small pills caused by breakage in the fibers of the yarn used in a garment. Minimal pilling means that the fabric will not wear out as easily and will look newer for a longer period of time in comparison to the traditional garments of that type.
Moisture wicking: A moisture wicking fabric moves the sweat quickly to the fabric’s outer surface and dries rapidly so that your sweat doesn’t saturate the fabric.
Night-visibility: Clothing that has special features such as invisible reflective tapes that bounce light in the night or solar absorbing panels that glow in the dark. Usually used for cyclists / bikers / labour vests and hikers' shell layers. It is to increase the safety of the wearer in foggy or low light situations.
Organic cotton: cotton that is grown organically in subtropical countries from non-genetically modified plants, and without the use of any synthetic agricultural chemicals.
Reversible: Garments and accessories that can be flipped to reveal and be used as a second color or pattern. Snow repellent: not easily penetrated by snow, especially as a result of being made specifically for such a purpose with a special surface coating.
Softer fabric: The fabric is made from finer fibers than regular fabrics, thus giving it a silky soft texture and luxurious luster. For instance, Supima Cotton is a softer and smoother fabric than Organic Cotton.
Stronger fiber: The extra-long staple (ELS) cotton is over 50% longer than regular cotton. This adds the tensile strength of the fiber, resulting in high quality and long lasting fabric.
Taped seams: Heat sealed seams that stop water from coming through the stitching of the garment.
Touch enabled: The fabric allows you to touch your phone screen. For example our touch enabled gloves that have used special conductive yarn so that one can use the touchscreen while wearing woolen gloves.
Water repellent: not easily penetrated by water, especially as a result of being treated for such a purpose with a special surface coating.
Wind resistant: able to resist the penetration of wind to some degree but not entirely.
Wool blend: Product isn’t made of 100% wool. It has one or more other fibers blended into the wool.
