Frequently Asked Questions

1. I have been accepted to the University of Manchester. What winter gear do I need to prepare for Manchester’s winters? +

➤ Manchester winters are less about extreme cold and more about persistent rain. It rarely snows there, but rain occurs on 13 to 15 days each month during winters, often accompanied by a southwest wind that intensifies the cold.

Essential clothing layers include a moisture-managing thermal, an insulating mid-layer, and a waterproof shell jacket. Wear waterproof touch-enabled gloves and boots to handle both cold and rain. Since rain is frequent and often wind-driven, a waterproof jacket with a hood is essential. Alternatively, if you are wearing a woollen coat, carry an umbrella to stay dry.

2. Is it better to buy winter wear in India or after reaching abroad? +

➤ Moving abroad as a student involves a long checklist, including finding accommodation and adjusting to a new routine. We understand that shopping for winter wear often becomes one more thing to worry about. That is why many students prefer to get their winter essentials before they leave India. Arriving with a reliable layering system means you are prepared from day one, whether you land during the transition to winter weather or when it is already snowy. To make this easier, Kosha offers special student discounts on winter wear bundles, allowing students to stay warm and save money as they embark on their new journey abroad.

3. How much luggage space will the winter wear take? +

➤ Pack lightweight, multipurpose winter clothing rather than bulky, heavy winter attire.  Kosha’s winter layers are lightweight and temperature-rated. Two sets of thermals, 3 pairs of woolen socks, and accessories like touch-enabled gloves, scarves, and beanies, all weigh under 600 to 700 grams.

4. I am going to study in Germany. I have heard that the weather there can move through several seasons in a single day. How do I prepare for that? +

➤Yes, Germany’s weather can change several times in a day, especially during the transitional months of September, October, March, and April. Daily temperature fluctuations can reach 8 to 10 degrees Celsius, influenced by different air masses. To adapt, wear a Merino wool base layer for temperature regulation and moisture-wicking. Add a zipper mid layer for insulation and flexibility when it is cold. Carry a waterproof, windproof outer shell to handle rain, wind, and sudden weather changes.

5. I am going to study Computer Engineering at the University of Virginia. I have heard about the wind chill there. How can I tackle that? +

➤ January temperatures in Charlottesville range from -1°C to 7°C, but wind chill can make it feel as cold as -8°C to -12°C. Wear a windproof jacket over your layers to keep strong, chilly winds out. If your face, ears, neck, fingers, and toes are exposed to windchill, you risk developing frostbite and hypothermia.

Add a balaclava to keep your face and head warm and wear the outer shell’s hood over it as a screen from rain and wind. Protect extremities with wool-lined, touchscreen-compatible gloves, Merino wool socks, waterproof boots, and a warm stole.
