Winter Wear in Mumbai: Rent Jackets and Snow Pants for Cold-Destination Trips
Planning a trip to Ladakh? Or a winter getaway to Himachal? If you're wondering where to find the right winter gear in Mumbai or whether it is more practical to rent rather than buy, Kosha's here to help!
Driven by popular demand and our commitment to sustainability, this service is designed to make your travels lighter, greener, and more memorable. Whether you are heading to the snowy peaks of Himachal, exploring the icy beauty of Europe, or gearing up for a once-in-a-lifetime Himalayan trek, Kosha's rental service ensures you stay warm, without the baggage of ownership. This guide covers what is available for rent, how the process works, and which items in a winter travel kit should always be purchased rather than rented.
Why Does One Need Winter Wear in Mumbai?
Winter wear in Mumbai, in the context of this guide, refers to technical cold-weather clothing rented or purchased by Mumbai-based travelers before departure to a cold destination. It does not refer to seasonal clothing for Mumbai itself, which has a tropical climate with a January average low of 17°C and no winter cold that requires insulated outerwear. The relevant winter wear question for a Mumbai resident is destination-specific: what insulation weight is required for Kasol at -8°C versus Leh at -25°C versus New York at -5°C, and whether that gear is better rented for a specific trip or purchased for repeated use.
How Does Winter Wear on Rent Benefit Mumbai-Based Travelers?
The case for renting rather than buying cold-weather gear is most clear for travelers who live in a city with no winter of its own. A Mumbai resident who buys an insulated jacket for a Manali trip in January and then stores it in a flat in Bandra faces a specific problem: Mumbai's humidity and heat degrade natural-fill insulation faster than cold, dry storage would. The jacket loses loft across storage cycles in a warm, humid environment. After two to three storage seasons, the jacket performs noticeably below its original specification even if it has only been used twice.
Renting removes this entirely. The jacket is dispatched clean, in current condition, sized for the trip, and returned after. The traveler pays for the days of use and nothing else.
The Thought Behind Kosha Rentals
Well, you asked, we listened!
"We have received a variety of inquiries from our customers, who love the quality and performance of Kosha's winter clothes. Yet, they don't need it all year round, or they just need it for a shorter period (for their dreamy winter getaways!). In a situation like this, buying expensive winter gear feels unnecessary and often goes beyond one's budget. Renting solves this problem."

Kosha's initiative to offer its high-quality winter gear for rent across India gives you the best of both worlds, that is, it gives you the finest protection against bone-chilling cold and a sustainable alternative to purchasing.
Warming Your Journey (Without Weighing the Planet Down)
The entire belief system of Kosha revolves around sustainable, eco-conscious clothing, which eliminates the practice of single-use plastic in the readymade garment industry. To give a new meaning to our belief system, we have started our rental initiative, which further reduces the carbon footprint of single-use shopping. By renting, you make a choice that is both environmentally and wallet friendly.
What Is Available for Rent at Kosha Mumbai
Insulated jackets for men and women

Packable puffer jacket (men and women): Windproof and water-resistant jacket for men with an insulated lining and compact packable design. Suited for Kasol, Shimla, Manali town days, New York, and European capitals. Available for different temperature ranges.
Parka jacket on rent: Full-length insulated outer jacket on rent with adjustable hood, deep pockets, and temperature ratings suited for Leh, Manali Solang Valley, and winter ski destinations. Available for men and for women snow jackets on rent.
Plus size 4-in-1 jacket on rent: A two-piece construction which includes a waterproof outer shell plus reversible different lining. The two pieces provided flexibility to adjust according to the weather.
Trench coat / long wool coat: Insulated trench coat available for professional/formal visits and different styling needs.
Snow pants and trek pants on rent

Trek pants on rent in Mumbai: Waterproof trekking trousers for Himachal and Uttarakhand approaches. Worn over Merino base layer bottoms. Suited for river crossing sections, snow-covered trails above 2,500 meters, and any activity where standard jeans become wet and lose warmth.
Insulated ski pants on rent: For Gulmarg, Auli, Solang Valley, and international ski resorts. Provides wind and moisture protection on lifts and in open terrain where trekking trousers are insufficient.
What is not available on rent
Merino wool base layers, thermal socks, gloves, beanies, and neck gaiters are not part of Kosha's rental range. These are personal items worn directly against the skin; hence, hygiene and fit concerns are different. A rented jacket's insulation is undermined by a wrong base layer, and the two decisions are connected. The base layer is the one that the traveler must own and specify correctly for their own temperature tolerance and the destination range.
Rent vs buy: the decision framework for Mumbai travelers
| Item | Rent or buy? | Mumbai-specific reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Insulated jacket | Rent for 1–2 cold trips per year | High storage cost in humid Mumbai; insulated fill degrades in warm storage |
| Snow / ski pants | Rent for ski and snow activities | Rarely needed; significant volume; no practical use in Mumbai between trips |
| 4-in-1 jacket | Rent for mixed itineraries | Best used when the trip spans city and mountain, rental for one trip is cost-effective |
| Merino base layers | Always buy | Hygiene item, used during mild winters or regular cold mornings |
| Merino wool socks | Always buy | Personal hygiene; three pairs covers a five-day trip at negligible cost per use |
| Beanie, gloves, and neck gaiter | Always buy | Worn against the face and head; very low cost; reused on every cold trip |
How the Rental Process Works
Frequently Asked Questions
I am heading to Kasol in late December. The temperature there drops to -8°C at night. What jacket should I rent, and what do I need to buy?
For Kasol in late December, rent an insulated waterproof jacket rated to -15°C. This covers the Kasol valley temperature range with adequate margin for wind along the river path and cooler nights. For the Kheerganga trek from Kasol, which gains 600 meters to around 2,950 metros, the same jacket works but trek pants on rent are advisable for the snow-covered upper sections and the river-crossing approach.
I have a ski trip to Gulmarg planned. Should I rent a waterproof jacket or wear a regular fleece hoodie?
For Gulmarg, rent a water-repellent, insulated jacket. The difference matters on the slopes: a ski jacket has a snow skirt at the hem that prevents snow entry during falls, closed sleeve cuffs, and a hood sized to fit over a ski helmet. Gulmarg's ski terrain, during January, experiences -8°C to -18°C on the slopes and windchill on exposed sections pushing effective temperature lower. Ski pants on rent complete the outer layer for the slopes. Depending on temperatures and how cold you feel, you can wear one or two Merino-bamboo tops, and a fleece hoodie under it.
Is there a security deposit, and how is it handled?
Yes, Kosha requires security deposits equal in amount to the jacket's original cost. This deposit can be made through GPay, UPI, or cash (credit/debit card payments are not accepted). The deposit is refunded in cash, minus the rental fee, if the jacket is returned on time and in good condition. Deductions may occur if the garment bears damage.
Is there a minimum rental period, and what happens if my trip is extended?
Kosha's minimum rental period is three days. Shipping days are not counted as rental days; the rental period begins on the day the jacket reaches the traveler. If the trip is extended beyond the original return date, contact Kosha's team before the original return date to arrange an extension at the standard daily rental rate. Late returns without prior notice are subject to the deposit deduction policy.
What happens if the rented jacket gets damaged?
Kosha observes a clear damage policy. A little aging of a unit will not affect the deposit. If any major damage is found, a reasonable charge amount based on repairs will be deducted from the deposit. In any such event, where the extent of damages is so much that the item is no longer capable of being used, the entire deposit shall stand forfeited. You will be notified regarding any deductions within 48 hours of the date of return, with photos and a breakdown of cost.
