Kailash Manasarovar Yatra: Travel Guide and Packing List For 2026

by Akshaya Ramesh 01 Jul 2026

Mount Kailash stands at 6,638 meters in the Tibet Autonomous Region. Lake Manasarovar sits at its base at 4,590 meters, the highest freshwater lake in Asia. The Kailash Parikrama, the circumambulation of the mountain that forms the core of the Yatra, covers 13 to 22 kilometers per day over rocky high-altitude terrain. These are not numbers that require amplification. They describe a journey that demands specific physical preparation and precise packing, alongside the spiritual readiness that draws pilgrims from across four religious traditions.

This guide covers the essential travel details for the 2025 Yatra and the complete packing list, with particular attention to thermal wear, layering, and cold-weather gear for a route where daytime temperatures sit between 15°C and 20°C but nights approach freezing even in the warmest months of the season.

What is the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra?

The Kailash Manasarovar Yatra is a high-altitude pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, considered sacred in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon traditions.

It involves trekking at altitudes above 4,500 metres across approximately three weeks, with the Parikrama covering 52 kilometres around Mount Kailash over three days.

The 2025 Yatra resumed after a three-year hiatus, operated by the Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam and organised jointly by the Government of Uttarakhand and the Ministry of External Affairs, via the Lipulekh Pass in Pithoragarh.

Essential Travel Details

Best time to visit

The Yatra window is May to September. July and August offer the most stable weather, though the monsoon season from late July onward brings rainfall and slippery trails. The MEA-operated 2025 Yatra ran five batches of 50 pilgrims each through Lipulekh Pass and ten batches through Nathu La Pass in Sikkim, from late June through late August.

Routes

Two main routes are available for Indian pilgrims. The Lipulekh Pass route via Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand is the traditional route, managed by the MEA and KMVN, involving road travel and staged trekking from Delhi through Tanakpur, Dharchula, Gunji, and Nabhidang before crossing into Tibet. The Nepal route via Kathmandu and the Kerung border crossing offers a more gradual altitude gain and is the primary option for private tour operators.

Permits and documentation

Indian passport holders require a Chinese group visa, Tibet Travel Permit, and Alien Travel Permit for restricted areas. Applications through the MEA for the government-operated Yatra involve a computerised selection process. Private tour operators handle documentation for the Nepal route. Aadhaar and Voter ID are not valid travel documents for this journey — a valid passport with at least six months remaining validity is required.

Fitness and acclimatisation

The Yatra involves sustained trekking above 4,500 metres. Begin cardio and breathing preparation at least two months before departure. Plan two to three acclimatisation days at staged altitude stops before the Parikrama. Altitude sickness is common; carry Diamox and consult a physician before departure. The MEA route includes mandatory health checks in Delhi and at Gunji.

What to Wear for the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra

The temperature range across the Yatra covers 15°C to 20°C during the day at lower stages and near 0°C at night, with wind chill at altitude compounding the cold significantly on the Parikrama. The layering system must handle both active trekking exertion and static cold at rest stops and overnight.

Layer Item Function
Base layer Merino wool thermal top and bottom Moisture management and temperature regulation against the skin. Wear for the full duration of the day including overnight.
Mid layer Fleece hoodie or wool pullover Insulation. Remove in heated interiors; add back before rest stops and overnight.
Shell Waterproof, windproof jacket Wind and precipitation barrier. Essential on the Parikrama where exposure is sustained.
Lower body Trekking pants with thermal leggings underneath Warmth and mobility across rocky, uneven terrain.
Socks Merino wool cushioned trekking socks Warmth, moisture management, and blister prevention. Pack three pairs minimum.
Gloves Merino wool-lined gloves Cover extremities before each outdoor segment. Touchscreen-compatible for navigation.
Head and neck Merino wool beanie and muffler Heat retention and wind protection at altitude.

Kosha's Merino Bamboo thermal base layer is rated from 10°C to -20°C with correct layering and can be worn across multiple days without washing — a practical advantage on a route where laundry facilities are absent. Jackets and trekking pants are available on rent from Kosha for travelers who do not wish to purchase outerwear for a single journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra 2025 take place?

The 2025 MEA-operated Yatra ran from late June through late August, with the first batch entering China via Lipulekh Pass on July 10 and the final batch returning to India on August 22. Private tour operators offer additional departure windows through the Nepal route between May and September.

Can senior citizens undertake the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra?

Yes, with medical clearance. The MEA route includes mandatory health checks in Delhi and at Gunji before pilgrims proceed further. Senior pilgrims should begin fitness preparation significantly earlier than the standard two-month recommendation and consult a physician specializing in altitude medicine before applying.

What are the two main routes for the Yatra?

The Lipulekh Pass route via Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand is the traditional government-operated route managed by the MEA and KMVN. The Nepal route via Kathmandu and the Kerung border crossing is available through private operators and offers a more gradual altitude gain, which reduces altitude sickness risk.

Is thermal innerwear necessary for the Yatra?

Yes. Nights on the Yatra approach 0°C even in the warmest months, and wind chill on the Parikrama at altitude drops the felt temperature significantly below the air temperature. A Merino wool thermal base layer worn against the skin is the foundation of warmth across both active trekking and overnight rest. Without it, no mid or outer layer performs to specification.

Where can I rent a jacket or trekking pants for the Yatra?

Kosha offers waterproof jackets and trekking pants on rent across India, available through kosha.co with delivery to all pin codes in three to five days. For guidance on the correct jacket for the Yatra's altitude and temperature range, Kosha's Winter Layering Expert is available on WhatsApp before you order.
