Sock Liners Vs Merino Wool Socks: Do You Need Both For Extreme Cold?

Day three of a high-altitude trek. A hot spot forming at the heel inside a boot that fitted correctly at the trailhead. By evening it is a blister. The socks are damp and not performing correctly. The problem is not insulation. It is friction at the skin-to-sock interface, and that is a problem a regular cotton or synthetic sock cannot fully resolve.

The two-sock system, a thin liner worn directly against the skin with a Merino wool sock over it, exists to solve two problems simultaneously: moisture transfer at the skin level and blister prevention through friction separation. Thin Merino liners dry in three to four hours. Wash liners every one to two days on active trekking days to maintain their moisture management performance.
